Detoxification is a process that goes on in your body on a daily basis. Removing harmful toxins from the body is a crucial part in maintaining health and preventing cell damage.

 In the modern world toxin exposure has increased significantly. Today we are surrounded by toxins, they are in our foods, our environment, they are in our personal care products, our cleaning products, toxins are found everywhere.

 Our stressful lives have also led to increased consumption of harmful substances such as sugar, alcohol and drugs which also increases our toxin load.

 

What is Detoxification?

 Detoxification is a natural process in the body which works to remove toxins and prevent them from harming your organs and cells.  In detoxification the liver works to neutralise toxins for excretion via the kidneys, bowel and skin.

What are Toxins?

A toxin is a substance that may harm your body. Toxins include the chemicals arounds us:

Pesticides in foods, pollution chemicals, harmful chemicals in beauty products, chemicals in cleaning products, chemicals in building materials.

  • Toxins can include the things we consume: Alcohol, refined and processed foods, preservatives in foods, harmful food additives.

  • Toxins may also include the things we consider healthy but can have damaging effects in high amounts: The sugar in fruit, fruit juices and dried fruit.

  • Toxins are also generated naturally within the body as a by-product of normal metabolic reactions.

 

What are Free Radicals?

Free radicals are an example of these highly reactive and damaging particles found in our environments and produced by the body. 

Free radicals are produced by the body as part of many reactions considered vital for health.

In a healthy body, antioxidants work to protect the body from the effects of free radicals. Antioxidants neutralise free radicals and reduce the harm caused by these reactive particles.

 

Toxin Accumulation

When toxin exposure is high and antioxidant intake is low the body can struggle to process the toxic load and toxins accumulate. Toxin accumulation will damage cells, impair cellular function, make the body tired and sluggish and lead to disease.

 A number of serious health conditions may be linked to toxin accumulation including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.

 

Antioxidants

  • Reduce free radical damage in the body.
  • Most antioxidants come from plants and include vitamin A, E, C and carotenoids.
  • Eating a variety of natural foods is the best way to supply your body with the antioxidants that it needs.

Beta-carotene – orange foods such as carrots, pumpkin, apricots, sweet potatoes and some leafy greens such as kale.

Lutein – green, leafy vegetables such as spinach.

Lycopene – tomatoes, watermelon, papaya.

Selenium – Brazil nuts, tuna, sardines and turkey.

Vitamin A – carrots, sweet potato, egg yolks.

Vitamin E – almonds, vegetable oils, mangoes, nuts.

Tips for Getting Started

 

  • It is better to start reducing stress substances such as alcohol, sugar and caffeine prior to day one to reduce the withdrawal effect on the body.
  • Be sure to be well stocked with your supplements to support you initially with any withdrawal symptoms, you practitioner will help you with this.
  • Go shopping and plan your meals, get food storage containers to keep leftovers for future meals.
  • Donate the foods that will tempt you to a friend.
  • Sign up for your favourite yoga, meditation, tai chi, Pilates or Qi Gong class.

 

Side Effects

 

It is not uncommon to experience some adverse effects initially in your detox. These are largely due to the withdrawal of substance the body has developed an addiction to including coffee, alcohol and sugar.

People are often very surprised by how severe sugar withdrawal can be. It is usually worst on day three resulting in headaches, fatigue and extreme irritability.

It is good to plan you program to go through this at a time when you are not stressed and under the pump. We also recommend you advise your love ones to expect some irritability for a few days as this also seems to make it easier to get through.

These effects are usually gone by the end of the first week and you start to feel better immediately. Depending on your practitioners plan you may have some die off effect in the gut work or some reactions to making the liver work, your practitioner will guide you through how to support your body through this.
